Best VPN for Apple TV in 2026: How to Install One and Sign In without Typing a Link
Short answer: tvOS has no VPN of its own in Settings — you need an app, and VPN apps arrived on Apple TV only with tvOS 17. Our app, ProxysVPN, installs through TestFlight with your usual Apple ID: you accept the invitation on an iPhone, and on the TV you enter an eight-character code instead of a link a hundred characters long.

Why Apple TV is harder than a phone
- No browser. A TestFlight invitation or a subscription link cannot be opened on the TV itself, so the invitation is accepted on an iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account.
- An on-screen keyboard and a remote. A subscription link takes long to type and invites mistakes; a code is eight characters.
- tvOS 17 is required. On an older system there is no way to install a VPN app: Apple allowed them on the TV only in tvOS 17.
How to install ProxysVPN on Apple TV
- 1Install TestFlight from the App Store on both the Apple TV and an iPhone or iPad, signed in to the same Apple Account.
- 2On the iPhone or iPad, open the ProxysVPN invitation in TestFlight and tap “Accept”.
- 3On the Apple TV, open TestFlight, choose ProxysVPN and select “Install”.
- 4Get a sign-in code: in your dashboard, open the device card and press “Code for the app”. The eight-character code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. No account yet? Signing up takes a minute with an email address; Telegram is not needed.
- 5Open ProxysVPN on the TV, choose “Enter a code from the website”, type the code with the remote and select “Connect”. If tvOS asks about a VPN configuration, select “Allow”.
What matters for video
A TV needs a steady connection more than a low ping: the player buffers the stream ahead. The weak link is more often the Wi-Fi to the TV than the server; how to tell the two apart is in measuring VPN speed. The app itself is free; what you pay for is the subscription: $1.50 per device per month, taken from your balance, with nothing charged to your card automatically. Top-ups start at $5. An account opened on the Russian site is priced in roubles instead: an account keeps the currency it was opened in, whatever card tops it up.
If it does not work
- ProxysVPN does not show up in TestFlight on the TV. Check that the Apple TV and the iPhone use the same Apple Account: on the TV, Settings → Users and Accounts.
- The app will not install. Update tvOS to 17 or later: Settings → System → Software Updates.
- The code is rejected. It is valid for 10 minutes and works once — get a new one.

Can you put a VPN on Apple TV?
Yes, from tvOS 17: that is when Apple allowed VPN apps on the TV. There is no built-in VPN in tvOS Settings; you need an app.
Do I need a US Apple ID?
Not for ProxysVPN: TestFlight installs with any Apple ID. Happ is not listed in the Russian storefront, so a Russian Apple ID cannot get it there.
Which Apple TV will do?
Any that runs tvOS 17 or later: Apple TV HD and every generation of Apple TV 4K.
Why do I need an iPhone if I am installing on the TV?
